What is Reiki?

for Reiki Training

A Brief Overview

Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by "laying on hands" and is based on the idea that an unseen "life force energy" flows through us and is what causes us to be alive. If one's "life force energy" is low, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is high, we are more capable of being happy and healthy.

The word Reiki is made of two Japanese words - Rei which means "God's Wisdom or the Higher Power" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki is actually "spiritually guided life force energy."

A treatment feels like a wonderful glowing radiance that flows through and around you. Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.

Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.

An amazingly simple technique to learn, the ability to use Reiki is not taught in the usual sense, but is transferred to the student during a Reiki class. This ability is passed on during an "attunement" given by a Reiki master and allows the student to tap into an unlimited supply of "life force energy" to improve one's health and enhance the quality of life.

Its use is not dependent on one's intellectual capacity or spiritual development and therefore is available to everyone. It has been successfully taught to thousands of people of all ages and backgrounds.

While Reiki is spiritual in nature, it is not a religion. It has no dogma, and there is nothing you must believe in order to learn and use Reiki. In fact, Reiki is not dependent on belief at all and will work whether you believe in it or not. Because Reiki comes from God, many people find that using Reiki puts them more in touch with the experience of their religion rather than having only an intellectual concept of it.

While Reiki is not a religion, it is still important to live and act in a way that promotes harmony with others. Mikao Usui, the founder of the Reiki system of natural healing, recommended that one practice certain simple ethical ideals to promote peace and harmony, which are nearly universal across all cultures.

During a meditation several years after developing Reiki, Mikao Usui decided to add the Reiki Ideals to the practice of Reiki. The Ideals came in part from the five prinicples of the Meiji emperor of Japan whom Mikao Usui admired. The Ideals were developed to add spiritual balance to Usui Reiki. Their purpose is to help people realize that healing the spirit by consciously deciding to improve oneself is a necessary part of the Reiki healing experience. In order for the Reiki healing energies to have lasting results, the client must accept responsibility for her or his healing and take an active part in it. Therefore, the Usui system of Reiki is more than the use of the Reiki energy. It must also include an active commitment to improve oneself in order for it to be a complete system. The ideals are both guidelines for living a gracious life and virtues worthy of practice for their inherent value.

The secret art of inviting happiness

Becoming A Reiki Master

by William Lee Rand

Reiki is a sacred practice that requires reverence and our greatest respect if we are to experience its most wonderful value. The benefits of Reiki can be all encompassing, not only giving us the ability to heal ourselves and others, which by itself is deeply meaningful, but also bringing guidance for our lives. Its unlimited nature can create opportunities for continual growth, unfoldment and the awakening of our own boundless potential. The ever increasing joy, peace and abundance that await those who sincerely pursue the path of Reiki are not only a blessing to be enjoyed, but also contain the healing that the planet so dearly needs. Those who have been initiated into Reiki often feel this greater potential and aspire to continue on to the Advanced and Master levels.

The desire to grow is inherent in simply being alive. As we look around ourselves and observe living things, we can clearly see that the one activity that all living things share is growth.

Everything that is alive grows. Because this is what living things do, one could even say that the purpose of life is to grow. Therefore, the desire to grow in ones Reiki potential is a natural expression of ones core essence and of life itself. If you feel this desire in your heart, honor and respect it. Doing so, will fulfill an innate need.

The joys of becoming a Reiki Master are many and you don't necessarily have to teach in order for the Master training to be useful. The additional healing energy, symbols, techniques and knowledge will add value to your healing abilities. Treating yourself, giving yourself and others healing attunements and treating others in person and at a distance will all be noticeably improved. The fact that you can pass Reiki on to friends and family is also a definite plus. Many take the Master training with just this in mind. However, if you ever decide to formally teach, you will be able to do so. As each person takes the Reiki Master training, and increases their personal vibration, this adds to the vibration of the whole planet!

One of the greatest joys of Reiki Mastership is teaching Reiki to others. Imagine the thrill of witnessing the members of your Reiki class receiving Reiki energy during the attunement. Then, as you guide them in its use, sharing in their joy and amazement as they experience it's gentle power flowing though them for the first time. As your students use Reiki to help family, friends and clients, a wonderful sense of spiritual connection will develop between all of you. Feelings of compassion and love for everyone will be strengthened as you merge with the Reiki Consciousness and know more deeply that we come from God and that we are all one in God.

All information about Reiki has come to us through Mrs. Takata who learned the system of Reiki in Japan in 1935. According to Mrs. Takata, the definition of a Reiki Master is anyone who has received the Master attunement and Master symbol, understands how to give all the attunements and has actually taught a Reiki class thus passing Reiki on to others. Those who have taken Reiki Master training and not taught at least one person would not qualify as Reiki Masters and should call themselves Reiki Master practitioners until they do teach. If you have taught a friend or family member, then you qualify as a Reiki Master.

After Mrs. Takata passed on in December, 1980, the twenty-two Masters she had initiated continued to teach and eventually began initiating other Masters. At first they taught in the same way Mrs. Takata had done, teaching the complete system in three degrees. Eventually some Masters began making changes to the system, adding knowledge and healing skills they had acquired from experience and inner guidance. Some took the third degree that originally contained the complete Master training and broke it up into two or more parts. Some actually broke the Master degree up into as many as five parts, calling each part a new degree.

When seeking a Reiki Master to take the Master training from, it is important to ask her/him exactly what you will be able to do after you take the Master training from them. Will you receive the complete training and be able to initiate others into all the degrees including full Reiki Master or will something be left out, requiring you to take additional sub-levels or degrees and pay additional fees? Because of the changes some have made to the system of Reiki, this is a very important question.

Becoming a Reiki Master is a serious step that must be preceded by necessary preparation. One must first take Reiki I&II and Advanced Reiki training. It is also necessary to meditate on your life purpose and decide if Reiki Mastership is in harmony with it. Then, it is important to find a Reiki Master to study with who is competent and who you feel attuned to and will support you after you become a Reiki Master.

Becoming a Reiki Master implies that you will be able to initiate others into Reiki. Therefore, it is important to find a teacher who will spend time in class helping you practice the attunement process. Ask your teacher how much time is spent in class practicing the attunements as some teachers spend little or none.

Also ask them how much support they are willing to give you to begin teaching your own classes. This is important. Some Reiki Masters will have little interest in helping you get started as they are afraid you will take student away from them. If you are serious about becoming a successful teaching Reiki Master, find a teacher who will openly support you in achieving your goal.

Before teaching your first class, additional practice doing the attunements is a good idea. This can be done on friends who already have Reiki. Ask them if they would like to be an "attunement model" and let them know that the additional attunements will be beneficial for them and will refine and strengthen their Reiki energies. Most will gladly agree. If you can't find someone to practice on, you can use a teddy bear or a pillow to represent a person.

It will also be necessary to practice the talks, lectures and meditations you will be leading in class. Make outlines of your talks and practice into a tape recorder. Listen to your tapes and take notes on ways you can improve your talks. Then continue to practice until you are confident. Don't be afraid to use your outline in class. When teaching, relax and let the Reiki energy do the work.

If you have a sincere desire to help others and have taken the time to prepare to teach, you should have no trouble attracting students. It is your attitude that creates the results you receive so, assume success and you will create success. (See the the previous two articles for ideas on promoting your practice)

As a teaching Reiki Master it is important to treat your students with the greatest respect. Know that each has the spark of God within them. Never use subtle threats or the withholding of information to cause your students to be dependent on you. Openly encourage each student to be connected to her/his own power and freedom of choice. What you create for others comes back to you. As you truly empower others, so will you be empowered. Trust in the abundance of the Universe and you will receive abundance and you will also be blessed with peace and joy.

When teaching Reiki to others, it is important to set a good example by being an authentic representative of Reiki energy. People cannot be so easily fooled by surface spirituality now. They want and need a real teacher who comes from experience and is working on her/his own deep healing. This requires one to meditate on the nature of Reiki energy and surrender to it. It is a continual process of working with all aspects of ones being that are out of step with Reiki energy and allowing those aspects to be healed by Reiki energy. We must seek to develop and express the qualities of love, compassion, wisdom, justice, cooperation, humility, persistence, kindness, courage, strength, and abundance as Reiki energy is all of these and more. It may seem paradoxical, but it is true that a true Reiki Master is one who is always becoming a Reiki Master. Like life itself, it is a process of continual growth.

As you do this, you will realize sooner or later that there is more to Reiki than using it to heal yourself and others of specific problems. Reiki has a deeper purpose. In the same way that Reiki is able to guide healing energy when you are giving a treatment, Reiki can guide your life.

There is a perfect plan for your life that has always been present and has been waiting for you. This plan is exactly what is good and right and healthy for you. This plan is not based on what your parents want for you, or what the culture says you need to be accepted, but on what will really make you happy. This plan is inside you and comes from your core essence. Reiki can guide you to this plan and help you follow it. This plan is your true spiritual path.

By treating yourself and others and meditating on the essence of Reiki, you will be guided more and more by Reiki in making important decisions. Sometimes you will find yourself doing things that don't make sense or conform to what you think you should be doing and sometimes you will be guided to do things that you have vowed you would never do. However, by trusting more and more in the guidance of Reiki, by letting go of what your ego thinks it needs to be happy and by humbly surrendering to Reiki's loving power, you will find your life changing in ways that bring greater harmony and feelings of real happiness.

Over time, you will learn from experience that the guidance of Reiki is worthy of your trust. Once you have surrendered completely, you will have entered the Way of Reiki. When you do this, you will be at peace with the past and have complete faith in the future and know that there never was anything to worry about. Your life will work with ever greater harmony and you will feel that you have reached your goal of wholeness even as you continue to move toward it!

In the end, we must consider that a Reiki Master is not one who has mastered Reiki, but one who has been mastered by Reiki. This requires that we surrender completely to the spirit of Reiki, allowing it to guide every area of our lives and become our only focus and source of nurturing and sustenance. As we proceed toward the end of the millinium, the Way of Reiki offers itself as a solution to our problems and a path of unlimited potiential. May all who would benefit from this path be guided to it.

What is Possible for a Reiki Master?

by William Lee Rand

Because of the nature of the master level and the energies that become available to us, being a Reiki master can be an ongoing process involving continuous personal growth. With the master attunement and the use of the master symbol, we receive the opportunity to open more and more completely to the limitless potential of Reiki and to develop in ourselves the qualities that are contained in the Reiki energy. Consider all the aspects of Reiki energy - besides the potential to heal virtually all illness, it also contains unlimited love, joy, peace, compassion, wisdom, abundance and even more. We know these are the qualities of Reiki because people experience them when giving or receiving Reiki treatments. They are especially apparent when we meditate on the source of Reiki. When doing so, many are lifted up into a safe place where they feel completely cared for and become aware of the wonderful possibilities that can come from within.

When we contemplate these things it is easy to become overwhelmed with optimism and the confident understanding that all challenges in life can be met and that our lives can be a glorious experience. The Japanese name for the master level of Reiki is Shinpiden which means "Mystery Teaching." The mystery which is spoken of is the mystery of God's love, wisdom and power. It is a mystery because God has no boundaries; all the attributes of God including wonder, beauty and grace extend far beyond our ability to comprehend. No matter how developed we become, in this life or in any future level of existence, we will never fully understand it. This is why it is and will always remain a wonderful mystery.

When we receive the Usui master symbol and the attunement that empowers it, it creates the possibility for us to become aware of the Ultimate Reality. This is expressed in the definition of the Usui master symbol which indicates that it represents that part of the self that is already completely enlightened! When we use the master symbol, we are actually connecting with our own enlightened selves. This in fact, is the true source of Reiki energy - it actually comes from the deepest and most important part of our own nature, our own enlightened self!. While it may appear to some to come from outside ourselves appearing to come down through the crown chakra, this is actually an illusion and only appears this way because of our limited awareness.

Reiki comes to us by the Grace of God and it is this same Grace that heals us and fosters our personal growth. Yet development does not take place automatically. Reiki respects our free will and does not force development on us, but if we seek it and intend it, and use Reiki for this purpose, then certainly, we will be guided into a greater healing experience. Try this experiment. Begin doing Reiki on yourself using the master symbol with your hands in any position that is comfortable. (If you are not a Reiki master but have level I or II, try it anyway without the master symbol.) Then meditate on this affirmation. "I surrender completely to the Reiki energy and the source from which it comes." Repeat this affirmation over and over, then as the Reiki energy continues to flow, with your inner eye, look for the source of Reiki, either within yourself or above.

By doing this, you will have many important experiences. These are likely to include becoming more aware of how Reiki is working within you and feeling it's amazing qualities. New possibilities for personal growth will be presented and you will be invited to participate in life in a more meaningful way. As your awareness moves closer and closer to the source, you will become aware of amazing insights and have ever increasing experiences of joy, security and peace. This is a wonderful exercise and well worth the time. I suggest you do this everyday and as you do so, these experiences will become stronger. Then, if you choose to accept the healing changes that are presented, deep healing will begin taking place and you will also begin receiving guidance about how to improve your life. While this meditation is simple, it is also very powerful and can lead you into a very happy and healthy state of mind, creating lasting changes that will form the foundation of a more worthwhile life.

Reiki can guide you in ways to make it's healing power more beneficial and to heal more deeply. And at the same time, it is possible that Reiki will guide you to other healing techniques that are exactly right for you to use in addition to Reiki. You may also receive guidance about changes you need to make that require you to take action. Your ability to make decisions can improve, making it very easy to decide exactly what you need, who to associate with, where to work, etc. and this could result in an entirely new direction for your life!

When you are involved in the healing process, a good way to determine your progress is to use your outer world as an indication of your inner development. This works because we manifest our entire experience through our thoughts and intentions - both conscious and unconscious. When we experience something in our lives, it is because some part of our being has created it. When we accept this idea, and take complete responsibility for what takes place in our lives we enter a very powerful place. We can then change the things that are not healthy and improve every aspect of our lives.

If your outer world contains positive experiences, and you are enjoying your life, this means that your inner world is in a similar state. The reverse is also true, so when we experience painful things or are disappointed or experience things that foster fear, worry or doubt, this is also because some part of our inner being is out of balance and needs healing. If something unpleasant or unwanted takes place in your life, rather than blaming other people or circumstances outside yourself, direct your attention inward and look for the part of yourself that has created this unpleasant event. Then use your Reiki healing skills to nurture and heal this part. When you do this, the unpleasant experiences will stop and be replaced by healthy positive experiences.

As we continue on our healing path, we will become aware of a level of consciousness that resides deep within each of us that can bring a wonderful new way of living. It creates a new attitude that is entirely positive and brings with it the ability to solve many problems and create positive results that previously we did not think possible. This higher consciousness is what Jesus was experiencing when he performed miracles and when he had a profoundly positive effect on those around him.

This new consciousness is coming to many people now and in a short time will become the normal state for most of the people on earth. You might say that it is a higher aspect of Reiki consciousness, but it has gone by many names and it is becoming more and more available to all of us. Jesus spoke of it as the second coming of Christ and I believe that he did not mean that Jesus would return to earth as he did 2000 years ago, but that the spirit of the Christ would become available to all of us.

This Christ consciousness is not limited to those of the Christian religion, but is available to members of all religions and spiritual paths. In fact, this higher way of manifesting our lives has been part of all religious practices and has gone by many names depending on which religious or spiritual group named it. A breakthrough like this is possible with Reiki, so I encourage you to accept this possibility and work with it. Let us release all desire to hold onto negative ways that limit our happiness, but instead, embrace the inner light of Reiki. Within the source of Reiki resides the love of the universe. Those who focus on this love, and surrender to it's healing power are opening to wonderful changes that will lead not only to peace within, but to peace on earth.

Reiki (ray-key) is an ancient energy healing modality using the universal life force to effectively balance and heal the mind, body and spirit. This powerful form of alternative medicine enhances the body's ability to relax and heal itself after becoming stressed, encountering trauma and creating a state of dis-ease while restoring Ki (life force energy) into your body, balancing the chakras and removing energy blocks.

Karuna is a form of energy healing that Linda adds to her Reiki sessions.  It addresses certain aspects of the mind, body and spirit in a different way than Reiki (but very similar) and amplifies healing possibilities tremendously.  It's especially helpful with expediting results and removing energy blocks.

As long as you're willing to let the issues go, Reiki can help you.  It can be used for a wide variety of situations where a person's energy is out of balance or in a state of dis-ease, whether it's spiritual, emotional, physical or mental. It can help with unlimited issues - here are just a few examples: relieving insomnia and stress, conquering anxiety, indecision, verbal and sexual abuse, arthritis, injuries, inflammation, transforming trauma, anger, fear and depression, healing diseases ranging from Bell's Palsy to breast cancer, thyroid issues or simply maintain good health. Reiki should not replace traditional western medicine if you're ill, but it can be a powerful complimentary tool to speed up the recovery process.

Linda is committed that you experience profound, permanent shifts in the

unbalanced areas of your life and body. Using her coaching and communication

background, she developed a technique to explore the root cause of your issues

and help you overcome inhibiting patterns.  This helps you create new ways to

approach things that haven't worked.  She knows how to address any doubts you

may have and will make sure you feel comfortable, safe and ready to heal.

Her intention is that when you go back into your life after the energy blocks are

removed, you have new tools to think and act from a more empowered place,

more complete with the past so the issues not only disappear, they don't recur.

You'll start by discussing the health/emotional issues you're experiencing and explore possible causes of the imbalances.  After removing your shoes, you will lie on a Reiki table and Linda will explain what to expect. She'll place her hands on the legs, arms, abdomen and head, sending the Reiki energy through her hands into you. Your job is to simply allow the energy in and be willing to let your issues heal

regardless of how long they've existed or how permanent they may seem. When the healing session is complete, she'll "seal" the auric field and you'll discuss what you experienced. Toxins are released during the session, so you'll be asked to drink plenty of water the remainder of the day and Linda will contact you within a week or two for feedback on how you're doing.

Linda was trained by Arleta Soares, a long time healer who has participated in numerous studies on Reiki energy and its effectiveness. As a former hospital administrator, Arleta provides her students with

invaluable information and experience on combining Reiki and western medicine, and using essential oils, sound and healing crystals. Many Reiki teachers cover level I and II in one weekend. Ms. Soares takes a full weekend (and between 1-6 evenings) per course, making sure each student is understanding the content, progressing, passes a final exam and she supervises them from several months to a year before teaching the next level - when they're ready (not just when they can pay the fee). For more information, see "About Learning Reiki" on the "Services" page.

Reiki is often used to compliment or expedite healing while undergoing western

medical treatments. Many hospitals are beginning to include Reiki in their

treatments because it's working, in fact Linda assists her mentor at Donna Karan's

Urban Zen Integrative Therapy (UZIT) programs at UCLA. Dr. Oz declared Reiki as

his #1 Ultimate Alternative Medicine Secret.  There are scientific studies available

on Reiki's effectiveness with heart attack victims, cancer and more.

Becoming a Reiki Master

What does it mean when someone says, "I want to become a Reiki Master?" This question usually indicates that a person has a great love for Reiki, that Reiki has touched him deeply, and that he wants to dedicate his life to the practice of the Usui System. Being a Reiki Master is not the only way to do this.

Being a Reiki Master is not a new kind of job. It is a step further into your own self-discovery and development. It is also a further commitment to the practice of the Usui System.

It is common in the world today to enter the path of Reiki Master quickly, without much preparation. Based on their many years of experience, Phyllis Furumoto and Paul Mitchell recommend a different approach, one that allows the student to "ripen" in the energy of Reiki.

Things to consider as you prepare for Reiki Master initiation:

What motivates you to take this step?

There is no answer to this question, and there are many answers. Recognizing whether one feels an inner calling is the first step of all students pursuing this path. Depth of self-knowledge is a necessity.

Understand the practice of "master"

The foundation practice of the master is treatment of self and others. Classes are formed out of your own Reiki practice and your willingness to surrender to the will and guidance of Reiki as the energy of life. There is no need to advertise or coerce people to come to Reiki. Examine your motivations carefully

Find out the complete practice of the Usui System

It is imperative that you know what the actual practice of the System is and that, as a master, you continue to practice this system without conscious and willful changes.

Consider who will initiate you

Select the master who will train you with care and self-knowledge. Choose someone who has many years of experience and has reached a place of maturity in her own mastery. The master needs to have a connection with this lineage and a strong commitment to this system. Choose someone who has completed her own financial commitment. Find a master who has the strength to challenge you and enough clarity to guide you into the places where you are unclear. Choose someone with whom you feel a foundation for a relationship that will grow and mature over the years of being together.

Use time as your friend and ally

Don't be afraid to take years and years to make this decision, and to complete your process. It is not a sign of success to have a fast initiation. Take the time to ripen. If you are to be a master, this desire and calling will not go away. It will come back to you over and over again. It will come from deep inside of you; it will be more than just a good idea. You will recognize the strength of your commitment to this system expressed through your many years of practice.

Things you can do to further your path of Reiki while you think about this decision

Treat yourself every day, no matter what.

Attend classes of masters. Become acquainted with the many variations of Reiki and seek to discover which fits for you.

Organize classes for those masters you choose to learn from.

Begin building a support system of people who will treat you on a regular basis, a counselor who is not symptom based, and a time each day set aside for you.

Address issues around money.

Phyllis Furumoto offered further explanation during a talk given in Melbourne, Australia:

"What I want when you enter the community of Masters is that you are clear about your commitment. I want you to be prepared to deal with all the different circumstances that are present in the Reiki world today. I want you to be able to teach from years of your own experience, not have to borrow from your Master's experiences, or from experiences in other disciplines. I want you to have worked out how your family is going to cope with your being a Reiki Master. I want you to be present to your mastery as fully as possible, without wondering if you have made a mistake.

"Of course, anybody can accept an initiation in whatever timing they choose. But what I want for you is preparation so that you can fully accept this initiation, and that it comes in your own timing. This is an established part of the Usui System. Having a Master's initiation in a weekend with someone you don't know is not a part of this System.

"It is true that masters all over the world have not waited a long time before being initiated, have not been fully prepared to take on the mantle of Reiki Master. It is a very different world in Reiki today than it was 15 or 20 years ago. I find in myself that the largest difference is in knowing what I would want for you now, and what I would want for myself if I were you.

"It is my desire to share what I have learned about mastery over the last 18 years (this talk was given in 1997), and to be able to use this knowledge with responsibility. It is important for me to open your minds to the possibility of taking this step thoughtfully, slowly, mindfully, and to add my encouragement for you to follow this path in this way."
